" There aro more things in heaven and arth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." So said the moody, melanholy Dane, and what follows is as strange as a dream, or any thoory of philosophy ver taught by the schools. To those who ove dogs- and love is not too strong a ;erm to apply to the feeling which exists n the bieasts of many human beings for ;heir fourfooted friends- this strange inident, so full of a wonderful sentiment, will carry with it a powerful interest. Por the past two - or perhaps three - ays a dog was to be seen lying by the urbstone on Boston street near Glendale venue. In both of his forelegs he was ïelplessly incapablo of motion, for they were broken at the knee joints and terrily mangled. The poor animal lay there moaning in cruel agony, as may be imgined - waiting and, as it is proved, longng for death to relieve him of his incura)le suffering. Ho had friends in the boys f the neighborhood, and they did what iey could for him af ter their kind, boyish :a8hion, and none could have done more. ney Drougnt nim lood and water to sus ;ain Ufe, and sat by him and pitied him, nd, as it is told to us, the dog evinced lis gratitude by feebly wagging his tail nd licking their hands. It was a sorry ïght, and yet it was only a dying dog lyng in a gutter. Day by day the agony f the animal seemed to be increasing in ntensity, but his vitality was great. Friday afternoon, in the presence of nany, he struggled to support himself on lis hindlogs, and in this way, stopping Jackwards by slow degrees, and dragging lis mutilated forelegs along the hard, stoy ground, he gradually and with astonshing portinacity of purpose roached a jond. This was near the intorsection of ie two streets above named. Still step)iug backward and still dragging his jaged limbs after him and uttering cries of ain, he deliberately walked into the wa;er, baokwards, until he reached the deep )ortion, and it closed over his head. It s only tho death of a dog, but the wise ay gather food for serious reflection out E this reinarkable fact, and some who niay have been slow to believe in the presnce of the reasoning faculty of dogs may ow change their opinión.
