Dr. Brown and his brother, contractors on the C. & O. Railroad, discovered a " coon tree " the other day, and proceedod to have it cut down. The scène whicli followed is thus desoribed by a correspondent : " The tree being hollow, burst open when it fel], and the coons carne pouring out like bees. It looked as ïf every knot and limb on the tree changed into live coons, and auch a niixing up of coons, dogs and negroes you never saw, or at least I never saw in my life. They were scampering off in every direction, and for about half an hour thero was the wildest confusión and excitement. The negroes and dogs aftr the coons was really an amusing siglft. Somo very largo ones when pursued too hotly would turn on their pursuers and in turn give chase, and what with clubs, fists and dogs the negroes succeeded in bringing up thirteen large coons, which weighed on an average eleven pounds, making a total of one hundred and forty-three pounds of coons living in ono tree, the hollow running from top to bottom. What is remarkable about it was that there was no bottom in the hollow of the treo for them to rest on. Now the questiou is, how did they manage to lio down to sleep ? They must have bridged across the bottom, something like monkeys do across streams; nevertheless, they weru thcre, and had lived there, no doubt, for years.
