She said tho sex generally wore too ignorant to havo the suffrage given thcm, and as for women háving the right to vote becauso they wero taxed, it was all nonsense. She paid taxos for the privileges or civilization. Mrs. Ware, being a woman, may say these things with impunity." A correspondent writes to the New York Ezcning Post that he has corapiled returns from official docuruents showing that tho total aruount expended for intoxicating liquors in the United States in 1870 was $1,487,000,000. Tho aggrogate cost of the flour and meal, of cotton goods, of boots and shoes, of clothing, of woolen goods, and of nowspaper and job printing that yoar was $905,000,000, or $000,000,000 less than the cost of the liquor. The total number of persons engaged in the business was 560,000, and the number of lioensed saloons was 140,000.
