After a long struggle, Madras, says tbo Pioneer Mail, is apparently destined to get the upper hands of her tigers by moans of what Mr. Calcraft would cali a species of improved drop. But in that caso Madras must sharo the glory with Col. Marshall's frienda, the Todas of the Neilghorries. It is strango that, after all our scientific niethods of cainpaigning against the tiger, we should be obligud to fall back on the simple tactics of an obscure, and setni-savage hill tribe. We have cunningly planned but to no purpose, that tho animal should shoot himself while eating his din ner. We havo induced him to swallow doses of strychnine - only to discover, to our inortification, that he actually returns to his poisoned carcass as if he rather liked it. The Toda plan, which Capt. Caulfield has adopted, is arailablo wherever jungle logs, brush wood and stones are to he had. It simply consista of an inclosure, disguised like a cattle kraal, with only ono entry, and a " live bait " (sheep or kid) insido it. The entry is so arrangod that in attempting to pass through it, the tiger is, or ought to be, instantly crushed by a downfall of bouldors. Tha plau soems effective, for, of seven tigers reoently bagged by Capt. Caulfield in the Coimbatore jungles, five were accounted for on the Toda niethod.
