The Council transacted no business on Monday evening, but adjoumed to Tuesday evening, when all the members were present except the Mayor and Aid. Ithodes. Aid. Rogera was elected chairman. An invitation was receivod and acceptod to take part in the Turner Touruament. The Finance Committee reported list of bill wluch were allowed chargeable to the several tunds as follows : To Ueneral Fund, Ï1.464 40 " " Street Fund, 245 03 " First Ward " 47 88 " Second " " 26 6o " Third " " 381 06 " Fourth " " 331 01 " Fitth " " 47 26 " Sixte ■ " 159 üü Two petititions or memorials were received from the Ladies' Temperanee Union : The first calling the attention of the Council to the fact that the charter authorizes tliat body " to forbid and prevent the vending or other disposition f liquors and intoxicating dnnks," and asking that the license ordinance and form of hcense be so amended that neither can be coustrued to authorize or wink at the sale of liquors. The second calis the attention of the Council to the repeated violation of tbe State laws forbidding the manufacture and sale ofjintoxicating [liquors nd of the city ordinances against drunkenness, nd more than intimates a neglect of duty, fear f and connivance with those who cherisli and uild up this monster evil (liquor selling and inemperance) in our city. Not a politie (ïf even respectful) paper. The memorials were referred to the committee f the whole for future consideration. An amendatory ordinance was submitted by he City Attorney (increasing the saloon tax rom tlOO to f200), which was also referred to ie committee of the whole. The committee on the saloon keepers' petition presented and referred at a former meeting), was made. The committee say that the Council annot protect the saloon keepers against the State law,- but claim that ïf the prosecutions hereunder are stopped the Council can mainain a pólice and preserveorder. If not stopped hey recommend a discharge of the pólice and hat the quiet and peace be left entirely in the ands of the ladies;" concluding, that " finally ither the women or the Council must surrener." Have the members of the committee read the provisions of the State laws and city charter deining the duties of the Council and other city fficials ? Tbe ladies seem to be the better posed. The practical wisdom of the laws is, of ourse, not under discussion. The committee to settle with the late Treasurer nd Recorder reported with statements. Acepted committee discharged, and report oriered led. The bond of L. S. Lerch, druggist, was receivd and approved. The Street Committee was given until June tli to receive proposals for building a bridge on jiberty street. Adjourned to Tuesday evening, June 9.
