It 13 indeed a sad and pitiful coinmentary upon the disoretion, jndgemont, or natural inclinations of a Prnsident who has had an experience of over six yearg in offico, this from a leading Administration organ, the Cincinnati Qatette, called out by tho recent appointment of the iiotorious and lcgislated out of office Gov. Shetpherd, to bo one of the Commissionors to govern tho District of Columbia : ' "The real friends of tho President and of the Republican party shouldspeak plainly to him ou tliis subject. They should see that he is not Biirrounded and controllod by syoophants who would conceal rather than inake known disagroeable truths, to the exclusión of wiser and better men." That is good, " surrounded and controlled by sycophams." - The Monroe Commercial (Rop.) noticing its Tpsilanti namesake's blast lor Cutcheon (ptsrhaps we should say blastiug of Cutcheon 's hopes), says: ."It is gencrally understood in this part of the district that Mr Waldron will accept a renomination if teiidered to him, and we know we speak the sentiment of tho Kepublicans of Monroe County whon we say they urgc-ntly desire his re-nomination:" which narrows the list of candi' datea by shutting out our friend Willits, of Monroe. - Tho Illinois prohibitionists have nominated a State ticket, declared in fa▼or of low salaries and honest officers, and for a greenback currenoy (instead of national bank currency) and a return to specio fpaymcnts as soon ag compatible with the safety and interest of the majority of the people (wliich can't be done with a greenback currency). Their candidato for Superintendent of Public Instruction is Mrs. Jennie F. Willing, professor(ess) in tho Wesleyan University at Bloomington. - It is now given out that a treaty of aniity (and cotnmerce) has been negotiated, establiahed, and ratifled between - senator (jatneron antt Uol. üorney. ne - latter is to take the Senatorship, as suc3 cessor to Scott, - the huckleberry on - which he has so long longingly gazed, - t and then is to lend his aid to boost Don r Caraeron into the Treasury Department " at the next deal. As Cameron ig repu! ed owner of Pennsylvania it is probable 3 that his arrangements will be carried out 3 - The vilo Beecher-Bowen-Tiltoni Woodhull scandal has been revived - again : this time by Tilton. It is not the ) inost odorous literature - espeoially for l warm weather - and we do not care to fill l our columns with it. Nevertheless, it is , our opinión that Mr. Beecher cannot . longer maintain silence. The public [ must have the whole of that letter f rom which Tilton quotes, that it may judge of i the cause of his abject prayer for " for giveness." - The Hastingg Banner thinks that i there has not been, is not, and never will i be so fit a man in the State to fill the of' fice of Auditor General as the present incumbent. What a pity the latest brood of constitution tinkerers had n't seen this and declared Humphrey Auditor General for life, with a lapse of the office at his decease or the inheritance of it by his old clothes. It would have saved the people a heapo' trouble. - The N. Y. Tribune says that Grant " could not help appointing Shepherd," and justbecause "he liked him and had made money by him." And again, " he (Shepherd) had done nothing the moral sense of the TreRirlot iírproi-i. tu fact that he had a tainted name only endeared him to the President, who bitterly resents a public opinión finer than his own." All of which is supposed to be complimentary. - On Sunday last, at Tuscumbia, Ala., the Hou. J. H. Sloss, member of Congress, deposited four buck-shot in the head, neck and body of one George F. Long, and in such a careless manner as to kill him. Long had been denied communication with the daughter of Sloss, and revenged himself by boasting improper intiinacy with the girl : which makes his taking off not very seriously regretted. - " The buokwheat cake was in his mouth, the tear stood in his eye, said he, ' I'm coming from the South, Susannah don't you cry.'" We were reminded of the pathetic words of that once favorito song, above quoted, by reading of the leave-taking of Postmaster-Genoral Creswell on Tuesday. It was an affecting scène. - James F. Joy, President of the Michigan Central Bailroad Company, has offered a reward of $2,000 for information which will lead to the discovery and conviction of the party or parties, or any of theni, who recently removed the rails from the track near Eulo's creek, east of Doarborn. - The Woman's Journal pronounces the Arg üs a " bitter" opponent of woman suffra. The Argus is an opponent, but can the Journal put its finger on any evidence of hitternem f Perhaps no opposition is to be tolerated, however reasonuble or mild. Is that it ? - Ex-Mayor Mosher, of Jackson, and one of JacltBon's most enterprising and esteeined citizens, builder and proprietor of Mosher's Academy of Music, died on Saturday last. He was buried with Odd Pellows' honors on Monday. - Did Messrs. Dawes and Hoar (G. F.)( of Massachusetts, have in mind the proverb, " Kats leave a sinking ship," when they declined to run again for Congress ? If 60, the signs of the times are oncouraging. - The prohibitionists of New York have nominated ex-Gov. Myron H. Clark for Governor. He was once elected on the same issue, and did not prove very much of a succoss. - Pennsylvania politicians are mad again : and just because some PeniiEylvanian was not made Postmaster-General instead of that fellow Hale from Maine. - The Supreme Court of Massachusetts has again decidod that women are not eligible to seats on the Boston School Board. Legislation is next in order. - Thero was a heavy fall of snow at Cape Breton on Monday. And that is what reduced the heat of Sunday hereabouts to an endurable point. - Dr. Wells, the new Bishop of Wisconsin, is now pronounced a High Churchman, but " not yet satisfied that a High Ritual is expedient." - The Rhode Island Legislature has taken a recess, worn out by unsuccessful effort to elect a United States Senator to succeed prague. - Congressman Field, the Lord Dundreary of the House, arrived at his Hamtramck home on Tuesday. - Darius E. Comstock, Prosecuting AUorney of Tan Buren County, has been appointed Judge of the Ninth Judicial Circuit (Kalanmzoo and Van Boren counties), vire Judge Brown resignad : to the groat disuppointment and intense disgmt of more prominent applicants. - Gov. Talbot having vetoed the license bill passed by the Mnasachusctts Legislature, tho Houso faüed on Monday, by a vote of 110 to 0:;, to pnss it over his veto. - Farmcis ia the vicity of Jonesville coinmenced cutting whoat ru Monday, with promisd of a gnod yielfl. Matt. Cakfeniek, Senator from the State of Wisconsin until the 4th of next Marcü, has written a letter, in which he snivels and whines over tho miacurriage of his infaraous eleventh section of the Judiciary bill - the section under which it was do8igned to permit Caupenter, Citandler, IIarlan & Co. to cooimence libel suits in Washington against New York, Detroit, Chicago, or San Francisco journalist, by serving procesa on a correspondent as agent. He runo claims that the section was misconstrued, and that under its provisión service could not be made on a correspondent, but only on such journals as might have a branch publishing house in Washington. And yet Carpenter kopt his seat and mum wheii Tiiurman, Bayard, and Wadleigii chargod that tho object of the section was just exactly what Carpenter now ropudiates. Why did henot "riseto explain" at the time P In view of his silence ihen his recent explanation will scarcely succeed in palliating the blow he aimed at the freedom of the press, and his tirade against Democratie slanderers will go for nothing. We are no apologist for libellers or slanderers, but trial before a subservient Washington court is not to be coveted even by men held up as libellers for speaking the truth concerning Congressinen or others high in authority at Washington. TlIE APPOINTMENT of Mr. EUGENE Hale, of Maiue, to be General is a " ten-strike" for Zack Ciiandler, he of the horny hand and hay-seed in his hair - the great Lansing inarsh farmer and farmers' candidate. Zack's third term in the Sentate expires on the 4th day of March next, and it is understood that ho is the candidate for his own successor. This being so it is capital in his political bank to have the great army of postmasters, in city and village and at X roads, well in hand and in readiness to do one's bidding. Now this PostmasterGeneral Hale is son-in-law to Zack, and is expected, of course, to dictate to his subordinates all through the State : that is, if dictation is necessary, which is seriously to be doubted, for judging by the tone of the Kepublican journals of the State (many of them edited by postmasters) CHANDLER is the nly man in the State fit for Senator, and when he dies a seat must needs remain vacant unless inherited by will. This unanimity is a great saving of nerve and brsiin power to the Eepublican fuglers. - We take it all back. Hale has withdrawn his acceptance of the PostmasterGeneralship. Nevertheless, Chandler already has the larger postoffices under his immediate thumb, - the chairman of of the Eepublican State Committee occupying and issuing lus bulletins from one of them. A Miss Eastman, of somewhere down ■■■l mini "Ml 14 li'iwiwuv SA. LilU nlUDtlQ of woman before a mass meeting of woman suffragists (say 20 persons) convened at Detroit on Friday last. Among other things, she is credited with saying, " Every dollar that a wife adds to her property after inarriage must be by the special grace of her husband." And this in face of the fact that she may control her own property absolutely, may increase it by interest or speculations, or by her own earnings, her husband not being perinitted to say her nay, and this while hn must support her and her children (they also being his) from his property or his earnings. And besides, she may dispose of every dollar of her property - real or personal, during life or at death - without his consent, while deeds he may make must have her signature, and by will he oannot aliénate her dower - though she has ampie wealth of her own. Isit necessary for these woman-suffrage wonien to know any thing 'i Two boilers exploded in a saw mili at Carrolton, just below and opposite East Saginaw, on the morning of the 30th uit., killing four men and wounding seven others. " Nobody to blame" was the verdict of the coroner's jury. Chakles F. Conant, Chief of the Warrant División of the Treasury Department, has been appointed Assistant Secretary, vice Sawyer, resigned.
