If that which is first in hand, is not instantly, steadily and regularly dispatched, other things accumulate behind, till affairs begin to press all at once, and no human brain can stand the confusión ; pray mind this- it is one of your vveak points, a habit of mind it is very apt to beset men of intellect and talent, especially when their time ia not filled up regularly, but is left to their own arrangement. But it is like the ivy round the oak, and ends by limiting, if it does not destroy, the power of manly and necessary exertion. The decreaso of immigration for the first six montlis of 1874, shows a falling ofi from 20 to 30 per cent., compared with the corresponding inonths in 1873. The difference is chiefly seen in the German element. In six months of the present year 2,000 immigrants arrived. An unusually large proportion go directly to the Western States. Presence of Mind.- Slightly sarcastic was the clergyman who paused and addressed a man coming into church after the sermón had begun with the remark : " Glad to see you, sir ; come in ; always glad to see those here late who can't come early ;" and decidedly self-posessed was the man thus addressed in the presence of an astonished congregation as he responded : " Thank you ; would you favor me with the text ? " He That Hath Ears. - The Milwaukee Sentmei which prides itself on the accuracy of its local items, says : " A stranger from Louisvillo got his ear between the sun and the insurance building yesterday.
