The civil war of our own country, which was at its height w hen the last volume of the old work appeared, has happily been ended, and a new course of commercial and industrial activity haH been coinmenced. Lare accesaions to our Keographical knowledge have been made by the indefStiinble oxiilorers of África. The great politiord revolutions of the last decade, with the natural result of the lapae of time, have brought into public view a multitude of new men, whose namea are in every one's mouth, hnd of whoso Uves every one ÍH curioua to know the particulara. öreat battlea have been fought and important sieges maintained, of which the details are rs yet preserved only in the newsnapers or in the traüsicnt puMjf1)!tions of the day, but which onght now to take their place in permanent and authentiohietory. In preparing the preaeut edition for the pres, it haa accordinglybeen the aim of the editora to bring down the information to the lateat possibiedates, and to fu-Tiiah an accurate account ol the mostrecent discoveries in Bcicnce, of every fresh production in literature, and of the newest inventions in the practical arta, as well aa to give a succinct and original record of tho progresa ot political and historica! events. The work haa been begun after long and caref ui preliminar y labor, and with tbe most ampie resources tor carrying it on to a succeasful termination. None of the original atereotype platea have been nsed, but every page has been printed on new Ure. fornüng in fact a new Cycloptedia, with the sime plan and compasa as its predecessor, but with a far greater pecuniary expenditure, and with such improvements in its composition ns have been suggcsted by longer experieuce an i enlarged knowledfie. The ïUustrations which are introduced ïor the first time in the present edition have been added not for the sake of pictorial effect, but to gire greater luridity and force to the explanations in the text. Thoy embrace all branches ol science and natural history, and depict the most famous and remarkable features of seenery, architecture, nnd art, as well as the various processes of mechanica and manufactures. Although intended for insïruction rather thsn embelhshment, no pains have been spared to insnre their artistic excellence ; the cost of their execution is enormous, and it is believed they will find a welcome reception as an admirable feature of the Cyclopsedia and worthy of its high charaoter.
