Froin the Woman's Journal. Duriug tho past three years a wicked attempt ha been persistently made by the advocates of free-love to destroy the reputation of an estimable lady and an emineut Christian minister. Detraction, Iike death, loves a shiuing mark, and those who advocate licenso seek to prove that all men and women are licentious. Meanwile tho Woman's Journal has remained silfnt : not because we have feared to speak, but bocause we did not ühoose to incroase the circulation ot' a candal, promulgated by'a woman of in'anious character, in the interest of imnorality. Only twice have we made an exception o this rule of silenco ; once to express ur disgust at the unmanly conduct of Hr. Til ton, in silently pormitting his vife to be thus slandered, when it was in üs power to have vindicated her good ïame ; again to publish Mr. Beecher's etter to the Brookiyn Eagle, whioh plicitly fcontradicted the charges made against him. The grosi and indecent arraigntnent now publicly made by Mr. Tilton changes the situation and makes it proper for ua to speak. We do so, without waiting for the replies of Mrs. Tilton and Mr. Beecher. Having known them both personally for many years, we will frankly say that if they ahould admit the truth o'f Mr. Tilton'a statement, we should find it difficult to believe, but that until they do so we iind it impossible. Knowing Mr. Tilton, also, we should require collateral evidenco at every step bef ore accepting any of his statements. The man and woman who are acoused have behind them the consistent record of private and public worth ; tho man who accuses them has no such -record. What have these three people been doing during the past seven years 'r1 Mrs. Tiltou bas been a patiënt, loving, devoted wife and mother, enduring narneless wrongs in silence. Mr. Beecher has been active in good works, devoting his leisure hours to writing a life of Chr'ist. Mr. Tilton has been advocatiug 'pfroe divorce," and writing the biography of Victoria Woodhull. The contrast is a sharp one, but it tells the whole storv.
