Mr. Medill, of the Chicago TrUmn writes from England : 41 Whisky is the the devil that inake the mischief wherever it ia toleratet whether in America, England, Irelant or Scotland. There are 200,000,000 peo pie in Europe, outside of Great Britain and llussia, who drink nothiug stronge than wine or beer; and araong all tha vast maas, outnum bering the population of the United States five timos, there is less drunkeuness and fewer arrests on charges of "druuk and disorderly," than in the single city of Chicago, which contains not one five-bundredthpart of their population. This is an absolute faot - a naked truth- wbich it would be well for both liquor advocates and prohibitionists to turn over in their ininds, digest well, and draw rational conclusions therefrom. A " orusade " against whisky as a beverage would be a legitímate and beneficial war, which, it' crowned with 8UCC68S by the extirpation of the accursed fluid from tbe entile Union, would be a most inestimable public blessing. As a temperance measure, the tax on whisky should be quadrupled, while that on light wiue should be reduced to onefourth of existing imposts.
