The Worcester Gazette thinks the anti-Butler Republicana in Massachusetts should mate the first advances toward harmony in the party. It says; " Nobody can crush Mr. Butler down permanently. Nobody can keep him out of Massachusetts politics as long as he remains in the United States ; and even in Vienna or St. Petersburg he could only be prevented from interfering by stopping the mails and cutting the ocean cable. At the same time his influence is now and always has been exaggerated ; and, while he is never to be despised as a weak enemy, we believe it unwise to let the fear of possibilities modify all political measures. At present Mr. Butler is under a cloud. It is his nature and his temperament, not to speak of his general curse, to be constantly placing himself under adverse ' 3es. lï he is left alone there can be ' ao doubt he will continue to prove his ' 'wn worst enemy. We throw out ;hese remarks simply as suggestions to he Republican leaders. Viewing the luestion from our independent : oint, we have indicated what seems o us good policy."
