There IS such a thing as " adding insult to injury," or if not exactly that of rubbing it on a little too thick for even good nature to bear. And just such an incident or instanoe is recorded in the following paragraph clipped from the Flint Globe : 11 One of the rarest hits of repartee that we have heard in mauy a day, occurred at Lansing, on the 26th uit., just after the adjournment of the Republican State Convention. During a most happy speech in which Hou. Sumner Howard presented the name of Col. W. B. McCreery to the Convention for the office of State Treasurer, he mentioned incidentally that he (Howard) lived 4aud labored on a farm. Meeting Hon. Cyrus tí. Luce, whose friends make a desperate effort to nomínate him for State Tresuier, just after adjournment, hé asked Mr. Howard, with a very perceptible sneer, what departmcnt of farming he was then employed in. The reply came quick and sharp that just then he was engaged in 'thieshing.' Mr. Luce was quite satisPerhaps the good natured Mr. LUCE may have been " quite satisfied," and may have thanked Mr. Howard for the " threshing." But, if so, it is an indication that meekness is cultivated by the Grangers beyond what is required of ordinary mortals. We shall see if this be so. There, WE must have been thrown off the scenttoo eaaily when we carne to the conclusión that J. Webster Childs was not or is not a candidato for United States Senator, with the promise of support from the Waldron men. Here is what the Northern Granger, published at Lansing, says of his defeat at Adrián : " We trust, however, that his defeat may only serve to inspire the people of Michigan to cali him to a position still higher, thereby retrieving the loss to the Second district and conferring upon Mr. CniLDS the honor to which his eminent services in behalf of the agricultural people entitlo him." If a inan's own friends and supporters are entitled to credit, then " somothing's up."
