The Demoorats of Michigan enter tb Gubernatorial contost with a strong can. didate in the peraon of Mr. Henry Cham. berlain, whoso letter to the Democratio State Convention acoepting the nomination for Governor ehows plainly euough that the interesta of the State and the peoplo conld not be placed in bette keeping than his. Mr. Chamberlain writes uot after the marnier of the professional politician. He ia a farmer who kuows irora well directed thouglit and study the needs of a farming comuaunity and places hiruself on record in favor oí needed reforma without any of the demagoguery and Radical zeal which have often characterized appeals to the prejudices rather than to the intelligenceof Western farmers. He favors a more equal system of State taxation, the curtaiUnent of the power of municipulities to incur debt except in extraordinary emergencies, the restriction of exorbitant corporate powers and iinmunities, nd for so amending the charters of railroads built uudor special laws that they shall conform to the charters of the road3- the more numerous class iti Michigan - built under the general law. He sees no secessity for a conflict between the people and the railroads, and asserts, truij enough, that al] their seeming differeiiees may be easüy adjustud by fair deafoigon both sides. Por statesmanlike iuoiiation and educated good sense Mr. Chamberlain is not surpassed by any candidate who has recen tly addressed the public.
