The St. Louis Herald, an independent newspaper published in Gratiot County, the home of tho rival candidates for the Auditor-Generalship, says that for ita own satisfaotion, aud tliat it might speak adviaedly of the strength of tho respectivo candidates whero they are best known, it has mado quito assiduous inquiry of tho effect of tho nomination of John L. Evans by the Deniocracy. It submits tho following as the result of its iiiquiries : After canvassing among citizena from tho various parts of tho ouunty, and oarefully noting their partisan views, we raust concludo ihat tho friends of Mr. Ely have plenty of lively work on their hands to do to secure for hini tho usual 500 majority whieh this county casts for the average State candidate of the Republican party. And we do not disparage Mr. Ely in muking this assertion. Mr. Ev&ns is a native of the State of Delaware froiu whence ho canio to St. Louis in 1867 He bas since been identified with, and an active, energetic leader in every project looking to the development and advaneement of this village and county, To secure lasting benefits to the public his liberality has been boundless, and as an instance of this it is known thnt he gave fully ono-fourth of tho entire subscription of St. Louis to secure the Saginaw Valloy & St. Louis Railroad to Gratiot County. His prominent characteristics of energy, ability, integrity, honesty and ganiality have drawn around him an extonsive circle of influential friends and acquaintances - friends thnt are friends indeed - few or none of whom will allow politicii.1 bias to restrain them from rendering the complimeut tendered him by the nominating convention more nearly substantial than it can be estimated from any recent result at tho polls of Michigan. We believe wo speak the sentiments of every voter of Gratiot County when we say that John L. Evans is in every way worthy of the position for which ho has been named.
