■ " " ■ ■ 'T V Tb Scientiflc American recomroends the following method of getting rid of old stutnps. which, if practical, is of great ïniportance to owners of stuinp lands: In the autumn bore one or two inches in diameter, according to the girth of the stunip, vertically in the center of the latter, and about eighteen inches deep. Put into it from one to two ounces of saltpetre ; flll the hole with water, and plug close. Li the ensuing spring, take out the plug, and pour in about one-half gill of kerosene oil and ignite it. The stump wül 8moulder away without blazing, to the very extreraity of the roots, leaving nothing but ashes.
