The present Sophomore class of Union kollege are determinad that the proprieie8 shall suffer no detriment at the hands of their brotherFreshmen if they can help t. A few days ago a smiling Freshman tarted from North College on his way iowu town swinging a light and graceful ane as he stepped along. His shocking conduot was observed by sundry Sophoniores, whose ire wns instantly aroused at ;he thought that a Fresh. should presume o the dignity of a cañe, and they " went or" the offender with the intention of tating the internal conceit from him by reieving his hand of that conceit'soutward and visible emblem, the cane. Fresh. did not Bee the subject in the same light, and, acked by his class, offered such stout resistance to his aggressors that they retired from the field - we mean the campus - eaving him still in possession of the light and graceful cane. The vanquished Sophomores remarked as they retired to their rooms, that the next innings should be their's, and on üaturday morning made good their projhecy. As the classes poured forth from;he chapel, one of the Freshmen was observed to have in his hand nothing else ;han a cane - a light and graceful cane - or at least something that bore a very close resemblance to that ornament. The 3ophs made a terrific charge upon the cane-bearer, resolved to capture the cause of offense or cover the Mohawk flats with gore. The Freshmen met the charge with consummate bravery, and defended the cane so carefully that the Sophomores were oompelled to cali for help from the classes above them. Eeinforoements arriving, the Freshmen were compelled to yield to superior numbers, and the cane feil into the possesaion of the enemy. The Fresh have no reason to feel cast down ; they fought a good fight, and the evidence Bhows that had not the Sophs been reinforced the issues of the battle would have been different. Another engagement is hourly expected. Two to eme on the ïreshmen.-
