Active measures are being taken in Chicago and other citiea to relieve the distress in Nebraska, consequent upon the visitaciĆ³n of locusts. The Nebraska Aid Society, in a few days previous to Oct. 30th, had collocted in this city over $6,000, and a large amount of donations in goods. It has transpired that the sufferings are far greater than were at first represented. We regret that a short-sighted policy on the part of the State authorities in endeavoring to cover up the extent of the distress should have been allowed to stifle the charitable feelings which a true knowledge of the case would have aroused. It is now stated that thousands of people are in a atarving condition. There are many who for weeks have had nothing to eat but baked squash and pumpkin and salt ; others Lived on baked fiour and water, one ineal a day for weeka. Ten thousand people will need aid sufiicient to keep them from starvation and being frozen to death this winter. Now that it ia known that assistance ia needed, we are sure that the country generally will respond to the cali. Chicago of all placea will notbe behindhand. The welfare of the Weat ia her wellfare, and any calamity falling upon the people trading with her is her loss also. With brighter days, the sufferers will return with interest the aid now extended to them.
