SOYPT AND ICELAND IN THE YEAK 1874, by Bayard Taylor. New York: G. P. Putnain's Sons. Bayard Taylor was very fortúnate in the time aelected for his visit to Iceland- the millenial celebration of the settleraent of the island. The account given in this little book of his journey thither from the north of Scotland, through the Shetland and Orkney Isles, his expenences in [celand, his description of the country and of ;he Millenial Celebration, participated in by the King of Denmark, his journey to the Thingrella and the Geysers are very interesting, furnishng a rare opportunity for the exercise of the ine descriptivo powers of the author, - an oportunity which he has improved, and his account is far more interesting than that of Byrce or Lord Dupperin. About one-half of the book is taken up by an aocount of the author's trip to Egypt. The Pyramids, Temples, and other gigantic monu. ments of antiquity in that wonderful country remain ; but what with railroads, canals, telegraphs and manufacturing machinery, Egpyt is ast loosing its Oriental character. lts social cbaracteristics are rapidly becoming European. !ts climate too is chauging, and rain ie much more frequent than in former times. The author's comparison of Egypt now with what it was during a former visit twenty years ago is very striking. The description of his trip to ?yoom, a región out of the ordinary course of travel, and rarely visited, although but a day's ourney from Cairo, is new and entertaining. The book is elegantly gotten up with flexible corners, and printed on tinted paper. - For sale by John Moore.
