The Atlantic commencea lts thirty-fifth volume with a number full of promise. In fiction we have : Roderick Hudson, I., by Henry James, Jr. ; Wilhelmiua, by Constance Feniinoro Woolson ; and Touching Yisitants from a Highor Life (we may safely, in the light of recent exposures, cali this fiction), by Robert Dale Owen, in which that gentleman gives his experiences with the "materializod" (we don't say spirit of) Katie King. F. B. Sanboru gives a first paper on John Brown's Virginia Campaign: Bayard Taylor wntes pleasantly of Autumn Daya in Weimar; T. S. Perry sketches Fritz-Reuter. Mark Twain tells of Old Times on the Missiasippi ; Ohver Wendell Holmes writes of the Americanized European ; and Gardiuer G. Hubbard on Our Postoffice, that of Boston, of course. There are two poems by Lougfellow, The Old Bridge at Florence and Charles Sumner; also poems by Ehz;ibethStuart Phelpa, T B. Aldrioh, S. M. B. Piatt, and R. H. The Atlantic and the Aaons for $4.75. - The Eclectic, truly what its name indicates, selecting from the ablest foreign writers, Tyndall, or Huxley, or Proctor, or St. George Mivart, or Max Muller, or any other man or woman, who speaks as ïf " by authority " on either eide of the great theories of scientific discussion, opens its thirty-flrst year with a capital number. There are two fine steel engrayings, "Blind Man's Buff" and " Vaudyke Parting from Rubens," and the table of contents includes the following : Modern Scientifio Matenalism ; Saxon Studies, I. Dresden Envirous, by Julián Hawthorne; The Ancient Classics; On the Hypothesis that Animáis are Autómata, by Prof. Huxley ; Feudal China ; Far from the Madding Crowd, by Thos. Hardy ; The Classification of Comets, by Proctor ; The Oldest Fairy Tale in the World ; Mill's Religious Confession, etc., with full Literary Foreign Literary, Science and Art Notes. E. R. Pelton, 108 Fulton St., New York. - The Aldine is a gem of both the graver's and typographer's art, with literary contenta to match. Among the pictures are : A Daughter of Cleopatra, after Vernet-Lecompte, by John S. Davis, admirable in design and execution ; three magnificent views of the mountaiiis of the " Delaware Water-Gap ; " Fisherman's Luck, a spirited full-page, also by Davis ; Love's Offices, by Siegert, and The Appointment, two match pictures, by Otto Erdmann ; Silver Full-Moonlight, etc. The contenta include : Chriatmas in London, by Henry Morford ; Student Life Abroad, by Feuno Douglaa ; Our Little Puritau, by Anuette L. Noble ; Lost Lillian Bracy, second paper; with poems of decided merit, criticisms on Literature, Music, and the Drama. The Aldine is evidently to lose lose nothing under the new management, either in its art or literary departments. $6 a year, with the new chromo, " Man's Unselflsh Frieud," a fine art work, and a coupon ticket in the Aldine Art Union or distribution of superb art premiums. The Aldinb Company, 58 Maiden Lane, New York. - Scrilmer's Monthly opens with Travels in South America, a review or abstract of a new work by Paul Marcoy, with twelye illustrations of scènes in that. wonder-land. The Canons of Colorado, by J. W. Powell, discloses more of the freaks of nature ; Saxe Holin contributes Part III. of My Tourmaline ; Dr. Holland begins his new serial. The Story of Sevenoaks ; Jules Verne has two more chapters of The Mysterious Island ; F. G. Fairfield, in A New Solution of an Old Puzzle, gives his ideas of how some of the spiritual phenomena are produced ; Kate Putnam Osgood tells the story of Hereditary Foes, and L. Clarke Davis that of My Night in a Stage-Coach. There are poems by R. H. Stoddard, E. C. Stedman, John Hay, and F. W. Bourdillou ; and the editorial departments are well-fiilled, Holland discoursing on National Politics, Room at the Top, and Ritualism. $4 a year, postage paid. Scbibnke & Co, 654 Broadway. Scribner and the Anaus, $4.75. - The St. Nicholas is a model number of a model magazine, with an infinite variety of matter and a wealth of pictures which must surprise and gratiïy its legión of admiring leaders. Miss Louisa M. Alcott begins her new serial, " Eight Cousins," and J. T. Trowbridge his promised story, " The Young Surveyor," in which the reader will recognize old friends. But it is impossible to enumérate the strong points or numerous ittractions. There is nothing namby-pamby or sentimental in the Si. St. Nicholas and the ABars, $4. - Gode.y's Lady's Book, profusely illustrated, especially in the line of fashion and working plates for the ladies, while the colored picture, " The Old Homestead " is really beautiful.
