It will be remembered that after all efforts to extinguish the tire in the Wilkesbarre Iron and Coal Company's coal mines, in Luzerne County, by nooding them with water, had been abandoned, the experiment of forcing Bteam into them was tried, although it was generally ridiculed. For luonths, day and night, the mines hare been sealed, and all the steam that could be generated by the most approved apparatus was thrown into them. On November 3Oth the steam was disoontinued. Last week explorers entered the " Empire " mine and, after carefully threading all the chambers except those that were oharged with " fire-damp," and coming out at the " Conyngham," they reported the fires all out and the result a perfect success. The Scranton lïmei says this is considered one of the grandest achieTements of modern coal mining, and proves that one of the great obstacles to mining, a mine on fire, has been overeóme.
