The readers of Harper's Magazine will be impressed with the novelty and freshneas, as well as with the importance ot the topics treated in the February namber of that popular Monthly. Coutiiining oTer eighty illustrations, in the rariety of its rcading matter it is to a correnpondiug degree rich and extensive. This number containB four distinctively American articles, three of which are profusely illustrated. George Alfred Townsend gives a glowing but accurate deRcription of " New Washington," showing what changos have been wrought in the national capital by the improvementa made smce the war ; L. J. Du Pre, of the Memphis Appeal, under the title of " Wondere of the Lowlands," contributes an entertaining illustrated article on the MoundBuilders of the Mississippi Valley. John Bigelow, from the uupubli9hed letters of De Witt Clinton to Colonel Post, gathers together some very curious materials, Ulustrating the acrimony of partisan politics half a century ago. But tne most important of the articles dealing especially with American topics is the fourth paper of the Centennial series, continuing the review of Mechamcal progress during the century now closing. In this number is commenced an interesting series of papers, by James Parton, richly illustrated, on Caricature, the flrst article dealing with " Caricature among the Ancienta." Geo. M. Towle contributes a very valuable and instructive paper on the Frenen Institute and academies, illustrated with a picture of the Institute building, and portraits of leading academicians. A very comprehensivo article on the field and work. of Christian Missions, illustrated by four carefully prepared maps, is contributed by Lyman Abbott. On ot the most striking features of this number is the commencement ot a new serial story by Mis Thackeray, entitled " Miss Angel," and based on the romance of Angélica Kauffmau's hfe. Moncure D. Couway contributea a graphic sketch of Professor Fawcett, which ia illustrated by beautiful portraits ot the professor and his wife. Mr. Mason's social story, "Rape of the Gamp," a vigorous and intensely interesting novel, is continued, with ülustrations by Fredericks. Two excellent short stories are given by Kllis Gray and Kate Putnam Osgood. The numeer opens with a beautiful poem by Will Wallace Harney, entitled " The Angel of the Twilight," with an illustration by Sol Eytinge. Other poems are contributed by Elizabeth Stoddard, Harriet Prescott Spofford, and Anna C. Brackett. The flve Editorial Departments are effectively sustained in their respective flelds, constituting the most admirable feature of this unrivaled Magazine.
