We venture to question Üie uccessity of the greater part of the illness tliat arifeé frora colds. Why should people have eolda at all? Unlike many other diseases, it i -veil undcvstood liow they axise ; all the conditions and causes thnt produce colds are continually pointed out by physicians ; theyare eaaily meaahred and recognized, and can as easily be guarded igaiust. All tliat ia roriiiircd íh due"foretlimght and caution - fon.'thouglit and caution thnt extend to. the conditiou of the atmosphere in the house, tlic kind of heat used for warming the rooms, the prevaleuce of draughts, the elothing worn at home and abroad, the precautions ngainst sudden changes of wather, the maintenance of warm and dry feet, the protection of the lungs and other delicate ov susceptible parta of the body ; all of which are essentially controliable tliings with every one poaaessing the ordinair faculties, and endowed -svith Uu: jivti.otf- --f fx--wi u,iian Tf it weve i penal oftense to talte cold ; n a cough arising from thoughtless exposiire were punished by a week's imprisonment ; if getting aick becauso of more incapacity to mensure conditions and arrange precautions werte ahvays followed bv a legal penalty and a loss of respectability - caU'hing cold wonld soon be among the "lostiirta." Thereisno use of liaving iudgnii-nt if wt! do not exercise it ; no ttse of braina if we cannot employ fonv thought in so simple a thing as tbis. In nllie colds out of ten the victim has been too stupid to take advantageof former experience, too torpid to iinderstand the nature or nrcessity of previtive meaaiu-es, and too dull to detect the palpalile ckcumstanera out of -whieli the cold has come. A child learnS not to fall i tairs after frsvo or tln-ee experiences of the kind; not to burn his fiugers m the grate after once testing the quality of hot coals and hot iron ; but udults go on getting eolds from causes that repcnt forincv blunders with a perversity that is simply amazing. - 1
