The gentleman appointed Inspector of Indian Affairs for this State is Mr. Erwin C. Watkins, tho present Speaker pro iem. of the House. His aeceptance of the position will leave a vacaucy in his legislativa seat (the Fourth district of Kent county) under the followlng provisión of our State Constitution : "Art. 4, Sec. 6. No person holding any oftice undor the United States (for this State) shall be eligible to, or have a seat in, either House of the Legislature. " . On complaint of his mother-in-law, William Stewart has been arraigned in the Pólice Court of Detroit for refusing to support his family. KAILJtOAJDS. At Detroit, on Monday, as the Atlantic express train from Chicago neared tho Grand Trunk junctiou, Cari Ludwig, who was on his way from his homo at Mihvaukee to a viöit to his home in Germany, became possessed of the idea that men on the train intended to murder and rob him, and jumped off. His body was fouud horribly mangled. His wife and father continued their journey, the railroad eompany undertaking to bury tho deceasod. DEATHS. A man named Gates, who kept a boardinghouse at Gould t Osborne's saw-mill, in St. Charles, Saginaw county, was drowned in the north branch of Bad river, at that village, in atterapting Lo learu to ride a log. Deceased was recently from Owosso, and belonged to the lodge of Odd-Fellows there ; was about 48 years oíd, and leavea a wife and family. Dn. Geokge Lee, for over thirty years a practicing physician at Mt. Clemens, and one of its oldest and most respectcd citizens, died last week. The body of John 'W. Galloway, a printer, from Battle Creek, was recently fouud in the river at Chicago. Eight papers have died ia Michigan during the last sis weeks, proving that hard times affect newspaper men as well as evcrybody else. MISCELIxANEOUS. The millers of Michigan met in convention at Detroit last week, and elected for President, J. D. Hayes, Detroit; Vice President, W. W. Hatch, Lowell; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr. Hibbard, Grand Eapids. The following delegates wero elected to the national convention at St. Louis next nionth : Jacob Barnes, Grand Bapids ; J. D. Hayos, Detroit; John Earl, Schoolcraft; Martin Stift, Holly; E. O. Briggs, Paw Paw; W. H. Jennings, Detroit; W. W. Hatch, Lowell; Benjamin B. Hess, Mt. Clemens. I It was voted that ïlOO premium be offered by the millers for the exhibition of the best twenty bushels or more of wheat at the next State Fair. llosolutions were dopted looking to the formation of a National Millers' Insurance Company.
