end. Eeport now has it that the Popo is nieditating making a seond American Cardinal, and that the high honor will be conferred upon Archbishop Bayley, of Baltimore. Gen. Tracy is reported as guessing that the Beecher trial will consume at least five or six weeks yet - three wooks with the testimony and two weeks for summing up and charging the jury. Judge Neilson wants but two days for the charge. It is not every successful candidate who can make as good a speech of congratulation as did P. T. Barnum, when elected as Mayor of Bridgeport. He Baid : " My friends, this is a proud moment for me, and I feel as though every one of you deserved a seperate cage." The Detroit Post claims Judge 'Williams of the Twelfth circuit and Judge Oreen of the Eighteenth circuit as Republicana. Now let sonio Democratio mathematician figure up the number of votes received by Judge Graves and set the old rooster to crowing over a large Democratio majority in the Stato. Durino the past week the Government Redemption Agency redeemed national currency to the amount of $3,558,592, and the redemptions and reissues of new notes since July, 1874, amount to f82,247,845. National banks are shortly to be notified of the redemption of their notos by the Agency. They come aolling in frora abroad to join the Centennial circle. Coldblooded Norway appropriates f40,000 in silver for her representaron, " Belgium's Capital " votes 200,000 francs for the same purpose, and little Portugal, through her Minister of Foreign Affairs, has informed President Grant that she will be at the jubilee. The Senate bill appropriating soinething over f13,000 to pay the outstanding interest bearing warrants of the University - once lost in the House - was taken froni the table and passed on Tuesday, by a vote of, yeas G5 to 24. Having been recommended by the Governor in his annual message his signature is certain. The $5,000 water supply appropriation bilí has been signed by the Governor. The Senate has passed a bill appropriating $0,000 a year for a homeopathy medical school, to be established by the Regents, at Ann Arbor or elsewhere. The Mining School bill has been favorably reported upon by the House Pinance and University Committees, but action thereon bas not yet been reached. Speaker Hoyt entered the Legislature at the opening of the session an outspoken anti-Chandler man, but gave in gracefully at the first turn of the party screw. His first reward was the Spoakership, and he was next heard of as claiming the clerkship of the United States District Court (Detroit), and is reported as declaring that Chandler and Conger promised hiin that " sit." Did C. and C. expect Longyear's death when making that promise, or was their influence with the judge relied upon to insure delivery ? Representativo Watkins, of Kent, was also bulletined oran anti-Chandler man, but gave in early. He has his reward, having been appointed superintendent of Indian affairs for this State : a $3,000 office with very little work. " Sich is life." CHEEK is a most excellent quality, a necessity in fact when otherqualities are absent. And that our friend of the Cowier has it in abundance is proven by his last issue. "We quote two specimens, scarcely knowing which, under the peculiar circumstances surrounding the case, to admire most. Speaking of Judge Huntington, and the campaign in his behalf, the Courier says : " They sent their slips to almost every Hepublican in the district, and visited every town and hamlet in the three couuties. It is said that men were almost bribed into votingc for him. That money was used there is no doubt." Again : 11 It ia safe to say that if one half the work had been done for Crane that was done lor Huntington he would have been elected." When it is matter of public notoriety that hired men {not hired by Judge Crane, either) were at work at all the principal voting places in the circuit ; that the number of votes these hired men were to give Judge Crane ahead at specified polls, or in designated cities and tawns, was made subject of boast on the day of election ; and that not a stone was left unturned to accomplish Huntington's defeat, it is difficult to teil which to admire most, the cheek or the impudence of our cotemporary. Until he can learn more dispretion as a " talkist" we would prescribe more caution and reticence as a " writest." The new Massachusetts license law, which takes the place of the prohibitory, ia a very stringent one. It einpowera the Mayor and Alderman of any city, or the Selectmen of any town, to refuse to lioenae any person whom they deern unfit for the privilege. Liquors sold must be of atandard quality and free from adulteration. No sale of liquor shall be made to any one known to be a drunkard, or to an intoxicated person, or to a minor. Licenses are divided into five classes, with fees ranging from not less than $50 to $100 each. In case of damage done by an intoxicated person the liguor dealer is made Hable, and he is further subject to damages should he persist in selling liquor to a person habitually liable to intoxication, after warning from a husband, -wife, child, guardián or employer. The liquor dealer is compelled to give a bond of $1,000 as a guarantee of the fuUfilnient of the provisión of tho law, and in case of violation, is subject to a fine of not lesa than $50 nor more than $100, or imprisonment not less than one nor more than six months, or by both such such fine and imprisonment. We can hardly doubt but that Massachusetts can and will execute such a law as this. The official majorities for Circuit Judge in the several counties of tbis circuit are as follows : Crano, Huntington. Ingham, (i 1 1 Jackson, 001 Washtonaw, 7 4 1,242 74 1,168 A respectable majority, but tnight have been much larger had " one-half the work been done " that was put in for Judge Crane.
