The United Kingdom of England nnd Wnles, Scotland and Ireland, with Hè Ohanuel Islands thrown in, are only twioeas largo in area rus the State of niinoiB, but thoy aro all tho "world's workshop," and are supplying tlio unocoupied parte of the habitable world not only with manufactures and capital, bnt with meu. Ono of their largest oxports is human ílesh and blood, done up in individual paokages, and shipped acrofes oceans nnd soa:;. The tide of emigration has been flowiog over since the firat English settlement was modo on the American ooaet, mom than 250 years ugo. It Las had its ebbs andfioods, bnt has never been vhoUy cut off. Even during the rcvolution, some of the British soldiers who carne to prevent our independenoe remained to enjoy it. Emigration from tlio United Kingdom attraoted comparatively littlo atteiition before 1815. It deserved little, for by that year it had attained scanty próportions. Tho number of persons ornigrating was only 2,081. The next year it rose to 12,510, and there was a steady advance until 1819, when the number was 34,987. Tlie averago for the next ten years was not as graat as this, but American flush times whon we were rushing upon the crisis of !83f-7 attraetod crowds of British and Irish subjects. In the fivo yeara from 1830 to 1834, in elusivo, the aggregate number of emigraiits from the United Kingdom to America was 381,950. This was thought enormouB, but it is only a little more than tho annual average now. Up to this time (1834) moro persons had emigrated to tho Britisk colonies in North America than to tho United States. Very many of thom had made Ganada only a half-way house on their joiu'ney to the "States," but numbers had ehanged their homo 'nnd not their flag. The tido turned in 1834. As late as 1839, however, the emigration ef the last tweatyiive years had sent 499,899 to the colonies and only 417,705 to the "States." Bat from 1840 tho figureí wore respteötïvely to the Cañadas 993,750, and to the "States" 4,720,570. Tho official record of emigration from 1840 to 1873 registers evory great economie event of that time - the lrisJi famine, the discovery of gold in California and Australia, the American fluaneial panic of 1857, the Civil War, otc. The '57 crisis cut down British emigration to this country from 120,905 in 1857 to 59,710 iu 1858. Tho outbreak of the Civil War roduced it from 87,500 iu 1800 to 49,764 iu 1801. The Irish famine forced it up from 82,239 in 1840 to 142,154 iu 1847, and 188,233 iu 1848, and 219,450 in 1849, and 230,885 in 1850. Corresponding figures for the North American Colonies were 43,439 in 1840, and 109,080 iu 1847, when it suddenly dropped to 31,005 in 1848. When gold was discovered in Australia, the number of emigrante thither quadrupled in a year. From 21,532 in 1851 it became 87,881 in 1852, and 01,401 the next yeaijáfoil 83,237 the next, or 1854. It continued to declino in Australia down to 12,227 in 1870. In 1873 the total number of omigrants from the United Kingdom was 310,012, or about 1 per cent. of the wholü populatiou of the Kingdom. Of these sons, 233,073 carne to tlio Unitod States. This rate of dccrease exceeds the annnal average increase of the Britisli population between 1801 and 1871. l''or these tcai years ifc was only 8.8 ])er cent. But tho gnat propertioaato Iokí was i'rom Ireland. Nevertheless population is now inoreaaing more rapidly than emigration anddeath togethei ca:i Uiin it. Accordiug to the report of the Eegistrar-tteneral, tho uct daily inereaso in the population of tho United Kingdom is 705. In 1805, the total poptdation was 29,861,908. In 1874 it was 32,412,000. Tho wonderful fact shown by these fjgtitüs is, that this little cluster of islands on the western sliore of Enropo shonld produce such enormous numbers of human beings. ]2ugland and yales, in j wliich the land is owned by comparar ! tively few persons, ire more densely populated than any other country in Europo except Belgium, which is a land of manufactures, and farm patches. Yot the density increases every year, desjñte the huudreds of thousands who leave the toenaing shores of Old England and
