Scribner for Ootober is upon out table. The rst place is allotted to a tender and musicaoem by Mr. G. P. Lathrop. It ia called Jesalmine. Major Powell, the well-kuown Western xploror, gives in tlns number an account of Au üverland Trip to the Grand Canon of the olorado, the descent oi which he has already escribed iu that Magazine. In the present arcle he tells the tragic fate of the small band who left tlie raain party during the former ex)edition. Major Powell introduces a curious udian story in the course of his narrative. )r. Holland, in Topics ot the Time, discusses hurcli Debts, Oft'ensive People, A Word tor ie Wonen, and The Slow Times. Tne Old abinet is coucerned with Hovv Badly We Do t ; Home and Society, Culture and Progress, 'he World's Work, aud Bric-a-Brac have theii sual variety. - St. Nlcholas for October closes the aeeoud olurae of this charming magazine, and brings ,o its readers sonie thirty interestiug articles, he majority of them beautifully illustrated 'he iruntispiece is a very fine wood-cut by Granville Perkins, representmg a battle at sea etween the American frigate, Essex, and an inglish ship, Pnoebe, during the war of 1812, which contest is also (iescribed in the opening rticle. Following close upon this is the very atural, as well as amusing, story by Mrs. Saah Winter Kellogg, under the title of How t Went - a very suggestive one when applied, s we discover it to be, to the manner in which winter's earnings glided trom the hands and ockets of two merry youngsters. Descriptive rticles, also, are not lacking, aud if the young eader prefer solid information to fictiou, he will flnd something to his taste in the well ilustrated descriptions ot The Frigate-Bird, and of a hunt for horses on the western plains. The article of most importance in the Magaines for üctober is that contnbuted to Harlers' by D. Theo D. Woolsey on The Experiment of the Union, with its Preparations. The article is full of compressed and valuable hought. The effect of Dr. Woolsey's teachngs ia greatly enhanoed by the pruning whioli lis words undergo. There is something pecuïarly fine in the conservative lauguage he emloys. üt this the following is an exaraple : 'If forty members of a political party were ound to have taken bribes and were expelled, t would be better for the country or State than f ñve were detected and two hundred were mder suspicion, although the suspicion might be wliolly groundless ; for a general distrust of nen in public stations is most disliearteuing ind demorahzing. Unjust doubt of human jharacter in general destroys the motives to robity arisiug from example, if it be not al■eady tha fruit of a corrupt heart." Mr. M.D. Jonway has an illustrated article on the South fiensington Museum. Irenus H. Browne has sketches of tour famous Paris journalists. There are some good stories in the Draver. The ladies of the Docoration Society return thanks to the loyal citizens or Ann Arbor especially thoae of the i'ifth ward, for tliei very liberal patronage at the festival. Thi part of Ann Arbor is noted for its thrift am enterprise and the generous support of hom iustitutions, as any person who has attempte to oarry on business here can attest. Whe Decoration Day again returns, and the upper town people take pity on us and turn out t help us decórate, in memory of the" soldiers o our own ward exclusively, their inert inhab tanta will feel just a little ashamed of them selves, we opine. However, we did have good time in spite of the weather and the non appearance of those who promised faithf uil their presence and their assistance. Our re ceipts were sufficient to cover all expenses anc leave a little in the treasufy, which is slowl but surely increasing in valué, and thus f we are satisfied. Mes N. H. Pieece, Sec'y. - The following special pólice were a] poiuted by the Common Couucil on Monda eveniug to act dunug the fair : Messrs. Joh B. Dow, J. W. Johnson, Johu S. Nowlaud au K. B. Uidley.
