Alexandria, Va., is the last scène of one of those villainous scliemes that take a man's money -without giving him anything for it. Invosti gation shows that the drawing of the Montpelier Feïnale Humane Association Lottery was a huge hoax. The managers were from j New York, and of the half million dollars received from tickets, all but a few thousand were absorbed by sharpers. Not a dollar was drawn by a bona fide ticket holder. This is a fair specimen of all these swindles. And yet evory loudly advertised game of this sort flnds its dupes all over the land. Poor fools invest their last dollar with the hope of winning a big bonanza. As long as men do not believe in Horacc Greeley'n theoiv i that the only way to get money is to honeatly carn it, they must not complain ■whon they are basely defrauded by gambling schemes. . ,
