He carne in witli a modest air and lookcd around inquiringly. The briglit look of intelligence which shone from out the weather-beaten lineanients of hia countenance, and tlie thin, tapering lingera, betokened the tramp printer. All he wanted was a couple of days' work to push him to the next town. When he went to work he did not remove las coat, his modesty being too excessive. It was a "solid dig," and he held to it nobly until the "take" was iinished, then, vrith a bland and suppliant look at the copy hook, he quietly inquired if the ordinary Massachusetts paragraphist ever stopped long enough to take a drink. On being informed that it was against the rules of the office to make more than two breaks in a column, he walked over to his frame and fiugered the type for a few minutes, and then stole out of the door as sileutly as hë liad entered. One of the boys went over, and taking utyhis stick, read aloud its content, as follows: "Cursed be thy slanderers, oh, Aleck Stepliens !"-
