The ï'aising of Beecher's salary to $100,000 a jear gives him the largest compensation in the Union. But one salary in the world transoends it - tliat of the Viceroy of India, which is L50,000, j or $250,000 a year, though it is possible the salary of Lord Dufferin, as Governor-General of Canada, is L30,000, or $150,000 a year. The ambassadors of Great Britain at Paris and Vienna j oeive but $50,000 a year. We are told that H. B. Claflin pays bis " creditsman," fonnerly President of the Bank of North America, Mr. Donaldson, $100,000 a year on account of his nnprecedented knowledge of credits. The firm do a business of .$70,000,000 a year, and this business is entirely a credit one ; thereíore a skillful knowledge of the buyers, their standing and personal habits, is of more value -tlian ten per cent. upon this amount - in other words, it is profltable to Claflin to pay less than two per cent, npon his sales to Mr. Donaldson. There are jnany salesmen in the leading houses in New York with salaries reaching as high as .f30,000, while the leading journalist must content himself with $10,000.
