As the only means of averting a catastrophe the Captain instautly resolved to sink the ship, lfi sent away the crow with such valuable propearty nu was portable, with the aid of the carpenters and engineers stove a hole iii the vessel, and left her to sink, Thie she did before the flre reached the magazine. The vessel was raised the following day but slightly damftged. A conrt-niartial commended tho conduct of the officer, and the Einpcror aokno-wledgecl his promptnesR, coohless, and skill by makiug him his aid-de-camp, one of the highest honors conferred on Bussian naval offioers.
