They drilled a hole through tbe rock 12 inches in depth, ■ cramrned the powder in, applied the torch to the f use, and shouted to the boy above at the windlass to haul them up. But that youth was not at bis post ; they cried louder, but there was no response. They became desperate, and one of them thoüght to draw the f use out of the hole, but it was too late. They now saw that their only hope of escape was to get out of the hole, and they must do it in less than a minute, as the fuse would be nearly burned up by that time. They i once again shouted at the top of their voices, and were rewarded by seeing the boy at the windlass, and he began to haul them up as fast as he could. Before they were half way up the blast went off, knócking them out of the bucket, and they feil insensible. The windlass was also knocked off by a rock, and feil, striking the insensible body of Hewson. A man was lowered and found the two men at the bottom of the well, with nearly 18 inches of water over them. Hunter's skull was fractured. Hewsen was not much hurt.
