Saline. On Wednesday evening, Nov. HHh, an ) teTesting meeting was held ín the Baptist Church, under the auppices of " The Youth's Temperanca Sosiety." A felicitous speech from Mr. Tb. K. Childs, ou his taking tor the ürst time the chair of president, was followed by interesting statements from the secretary relative to tho objects of the organization, the numbor of its members, (now 1C4,) aud its possibilitiea of usef tilness. Among the items of business transacted was a vote inviting Samuel R. Chandler, M. D., to prepare for presentation at the next meeting an essay on " The effects upon mini's physical aud mental constitutiou by the use of alcoholic beverages." Professor (xumaer was appoiuted chairman of a committee on essays, declamations, and recitations, and instructed to select a half dozen pupils from the Union School to furnish them. Kev. W. J. Campbell and Mr. Robert Campbell were chosen to lead off in a discussion of a resolutiou th'it " The liquor-tax law of our State is as good a law as popular sentiment on the temperance question at the present time will 8ustain." The meetings of the society are hld once a mouth, and bid fair to prove interesting and popular. The semi-annual meeting of the Womans' Christian Temperance Union of Michigan will be held in this city, iu the M. E. Church, on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. lst and 2d, commeuciug at 10 a. m. Article 5, of the Coustitution, says : " The semi-annual meeting shall be a masa convention, in which all men and womeu who deploie theevilsoi mtemperance shall be invited to join." In view of the prominence of the temperance (juestiou before the people of the State, a large attendance is arged and expected. An interesting programóle will be fumished for the occasion by the Ann Arbor Union. Local unions are requested to give as mucb publicity as possible to this cali. AH unions which have not paid their annual fee of five dollars will please do so at the coming meeting.
