Peter Curley, who is now in the Washington County Jail at Montpelier aa the supposed leader of the Barre bank robbers, issaid to beoneofthemostbrilliant crimináis on record. He is of fine appearance, gentlemanly in demeanor, vreïl educated and a fine musician, especially on the piano. He has amassed several hundred thousand dollars in the burglarj business by planning his own exploits and furnishing his paid men witli thfe outfit8, and has always bought himself off wheiiever caught ; but it looks now as though he had reached the end of his rope, f rom thequeer reasonthathefailed to get anything from the bank, and thus has nothing to restore or to use as the basis of a compromise, according to his usual habit. His first arrest was for a robbery in West Troy, when he took $40,000 in cash and government bonds from a safe in the Koy shawl foctory. He was not punished, however, and the facility with which he got out of that difficnltyhos sincebeenrepeated often. Heis supposed to have been the leador in eleven bank robberies. Miles who is also under arrest for the Barre bank robbery, has for many years been in Curley's employ, and hehas provided lucrative work to several other subordinates.
