The Loweli (Mass.) Courier says: "One day last week a party in a wholesale country produce store in tliis city proposed a guessiug match in regard to the number of pea-beans in a barrel ot tliat vegetable. There were several grocers iu the store imd their estimatea varied f roin 40,000 to 4,000,000, allgiin wild guesses. It was asceitaiiieil that there are about 506,000 pea-beana in a fnll barrel; this result beiug obtained by countmp; the number of bean i in a pound weight, and multiplyiug that by the number of pounds in the barrel. This of course would give only an approxiimite number, as the tígures for each pound will very prubdbiy vnry slightly, and the stuted number ot pouuds in a barrel nwy also vary. A gentleman of an áavaücéd niathematic 1 eJut-ation who happened in the stoie was ahked to guess Mie numbtr oí beani'. Ho reaohed a result by measuring ons bean, and Uien ñguring how many of the beana could be put in the barre). Ha placed the uumber iu the barrel at 2 000 loss than the result obtained by the easier method uf caloulation, imd hs figures may be even more correct tbui those by tlie loose method."
