From The State House To A Prison Cell
Josephus Sooy, Jr.„ late treasurer o New Jersey, was arraigned for senteuce in Trenton, the other day, for tho embezzlement of $47,000. Chief Justice Bonsley said: " The fact of your beiüg here at this time, convicted of such a crime, is a shock not only to the court but to the eomniunity. Your offense was one uever before committed by au official in this State so high in office as yourself. The conrt feels a certain amount of syinpathy with every man arraigned at this bar. Still, in looking at yonr case, we can see no extenuating ciirunistances. You were surrounded with friends of high position, and should not have been overeóme by temptation. The sentence of the court is that you bo confined in the State prison for a term of three years, and thence until coste are paid. Sooy was overeóme, and sank into tho prisoner's box. He is sixty-eight years of age. The general impression is that he has been a tooi in the hands of certain Philadelphia sharpers, who have secnred the greater part of the nonoy.
