Chicago, Aug. 7. - About 8 o'clock this eveuing Alexander Sullivan, formerly a journalist and later Secretary of the oard of Public Works, shot Franois Hunford in the stotuach, inüictiug a wound which proved fatal two hours afterwards. It appears that ilanford had written the Board of Education charging Mrs. Sullivau with iinproper inrtuonce to secure the appointment of Duane Doty, of Detroit, as Superintendent of Schools hcre, uiaking the charge in an aggi-avating mauuer so as to place her in a most disagreeable lifjLit. Sullivan this eveuing, in couipany with his wife and a friend, went to Hanfoid's housu to secure a rutraetiou which could be published along with the charge. This Hanford refused to give, and an excited alteroation ensued during which it is asaerted Hanford eithor accideutally or purposely struck Mrs. Sullivan, whereupon Sullivan shot hiui witU a pisto!, ainiing, he assertisd, at his arm, but in tho struggle wan struck with fatal effect. Chicago, Aug. 9. - Tho evidence in the inquest on the body of Francia Hanford was concluded this afternooii, and tho jury after one hour's deliberatiou roturned a verdict tliat Hanford carne to his doath by the hand of Alexander Sullivan, and recomnieud that Sulliran be held for future examiuation beforo tho orimiaal court of this oounty without bail.
