Whalebone is no bone at all ; nor doe it possess any proporties of bone. It is a substance attached to the lower jaw of the TVhale, and seems to strain the water, which the creature takes up in large mouthfulfl. Soaling-wax is not wax at all ; nor does it contain a single particle of wax. It is composed of shellac, Venice tnrpentine and cinnabal'. Cinnabar gires it the deep red color, and turpentiüe rondevs the shellac soft and lesa brittle. Burgundy pitch is not pitoh ; nor is it manufacturecl or exported from Burgunily. The best is a resinous substance, prepared from common frankincense, and brought from Hamburg ; but. by far the largest quantity is a mixture of resin and palin-oil. Copperas contains no copper, but consiste of sulphste of iron. Cobalt, sold as a fly poison, contains no cobalt ; but consista of impnre metellic arsenic. Bed precipitóte or red oxide of mercury is not made by precipitation, but by heating the nitrat of mercury ; when precipitated it has á yollowish color.
