The Lancet calis attention to the iniportance, as a safeguard to the public healtb, of securing the early detectiou of cases of scarlet fever, it being of incalculable consequenco Bot only to the patiƫnt, but also to the community, ia order that timely measures may be taken for preventin g the spread of the disease. 'Dip, Lancet says that the throat syroptoms are the most trnstworthy for tho purpose of diagnosis in tho initial stage of scarlet fever ; tho soft part of tbe palate ia exteDsivoly reddened, and not merely the tonsils, as is the case in the first instance in ordinary sore throat. When this condition is motwitb, accompanied by a very hot skin and a very quick pulse, atteuded or preceded by sickness, with a thickly furred tongur, red borders, and prominent papil!, a case of scarlet fever nny to prepared for. In most cases, adds this journal, eickness occurs within some twenty four hours after the commencement of the attack - indeed, it is wel] known to all observers that, in the large proportdon of cases, sickness oocnrs within tweityone or eighteen houn.
