Aecording to the recent process of Klemm of Htuttgard, the time required for tanning n calfskin has been redncfca to sixtecn hours, and that lor m oxhirïe to two and a half days ; but a more recent method, patentcd by Moutoison, of Manchester, promises to accomplish the same in froni a few hours to one day. At a trial made of it before experts, a sheep was slauglitered and sfcinnfed and the wool wns removed from the hide in half an honr, by sprending it witli a ehemical reagent, without tae aid of a seraper ; and the hide, af ter hoving been placed in limewater to neutra lize the chemical agent, was passed through several chemicallyprepared hiitliH, which required bnt a few minutes, and was then washed nnd dressed in the usual wny, and converted into marketable leather, only four hours having boen eonsumed in all, while the old process wonld liave required two to three weeks, and that of Klemm sixteen hours. Economy of time is not, howeifKC, its only recommendation. The wool is said to retnin its softness and luster, bo that it is not inferior to aheared ■wool. ïhe leather is 8aid to be in no respect inferior to ordinnry leather.
