There was amuaing testimony taken by the Louiaiana Senatorial Committee, and oocusionaily the laugh carne ia against the Bepublicans. There were a few negroes who were original demócrata - blacks who had been body eervants to iadulgent niasters. This case, fói exaniple : A negro who testified to having votod the Democratio ticket in Ouachita, was aaked by Senator Oglesby how he carne to change i'rom the Bepublicans to the Demócrata. He replied : "Well sah, mjr old massa was an old Jackson demoorat, and I was his body ser vaut. I would always have voted the democratio ticket, hut the niggers, they wouldn't let me. This time I had a chance, and I voted the ticket." He was then asked ifit was the proper thing for him to do, to leave the party that had achieved his emanoipation - if he thought he would tare as well in the hands of the demoeracy as in the hands of the rcpublicHMs. Ue answered : "I don't know about that. I think we is all instrumente in the hands of the Lord. I guess the Lord raised ol' massa Davis to be the instrument just as much as he did massa Linkum." The next question put to this philosopher was : "Have you any other reason for joining the democratie party 'r", and he anawered : "Well, cause dey is gemmen." He waB then asked if he ineant that the Republicana were not gentlemen, and he answered : "Well, I don't allow as you's no gemmen, but thein what we've got in our parish ia all on the steal."
