From The Slave Pen To The Council Of State
Wlien Edham Pacha, the present Graad Vizier, was a boy he was sold as a slave to the Turkish statesman Khosrev, who, upou discovering his extraordinary abüities, gave him his liberty and sent liim to Paris to be eduoated. He was borniu 1823 at Chio, his parents being Circassian. Aiter remaining at Paris three yeara liis patrón indnced him to study mining engineering, and for four years he followed this pnrsuit in France, Gerinany, and Switzerland. Retuming to Constantinople in 1869, he was appointed a Captain on the general stalf, and ten years later was made an aid-decamp to the Sultan, subsequently attainng the ranks of General, Chamberlain of tlie Palace, andmemberof the Oouncil of State. He lias also been Minister of Eoreígn AíTairs and Turkish Ambassador to various European courts. His political afliliatiou is with the Young Turkisli pnrty.
