We have received four nmnbers of The American, an illustrated weekly journal of eixteen pages, devoted to art, literatura, music, society, aud the drama, aud also trenching upon the fiold of politics after the marnier of Ilarper's Weekly and Nast. Some of the political cartoons are capital and striking, telling their story facetiously, pointedly, and sarcastically. Of this kind is Kendrick's full page in the last number,- March 31,- "(New) Policy Shop," a " Scène from the great pantomime now performing at the National Theater, Washington." Signor Hayesiui, as Ulown, has Louisiana under one arm and South Carolina under the other ; Signor Public Opinión, as harlequiu, reaches over Miss Columbia, who stands amazed, and pats Hayesini on the head with a wand or rod labeled " The Press " ; while Signor Zack Chandlerini, as pantaloon, looks a oombiuation of demon and disgust.
