I havo reoentlybeentold a curious iact in regard to George Eliot's last novel, " Daniel Deronda." It is this : Theheroine, Gwendolen, is a lady living in London, wlio some years ago was possessed oí nearly $1,000,000. She went to the continent and became " an infatuated gainbler," losing nearly all her money, and parting with lier necklace, as thc book states. pnring her infatuation she was narrowly watched Vy George Eliot, aud also hy a wealthy gentleman living to-day in Manchester. As I have said, the lady now lives in London on an income oí about $1,000 a year, all that is saved from the wreek.
