Notbing can better illustrato the deg radation of our politics thttn the fac that tbs vacancy on the bench of th Supreme Court is sought aftet by th paitisan niethods and machinery whio would be used in seeking a place o messenger in one of the departments. Kecommendationsfor at least twenty five a9pirants, includiug several judge of the Circuit and District Courts, har aotually been filed in the office of th Attorney-General at Washington Many othors have applied for the posi tion through their frienas in Cougress and soveral Senators have modestly ad vocated their own " claims." Now, of all of our public offices thi is the one which should Beek the man who fiom character, ability, and gener al qualificatious is most fit to fill it. Th Court has deolined enormously in pub lic estimation. The shameful bargain by which Bradley and Strong wero ap pointed to sustain the legal tenders b; upsetting a former decisiĆ³n of the Cour and thus saving to the Pennsylvani and other railroad corporations the dil ference between gold and paper on thei outstanding contracts gtruck a blow a the integrity of the tribunal. Foliowei by the flagrant violation of the Consti tution in the appointment of the Elec toral Tribunal, and by the indecent ao tion of the samo two men in that body the Court stands under a burden and a reproach which may yet render -neces sary its total reorganization. And now when another yacancy oocurs, by which an opportonity is offered to restore the Court, so far as the appoiutinent of one honorable and capable man might contribute to its purification, it is huckstered in the market liko a picce of merchandise, and under the system of bargain and sale which Mr: Hayes oalls his " policy," it is likely to be sold to the highest politioal bidder!- JV. Y. Sun.
