The Foundry Church--origin Of The Name
I.TIMIIT! The "Foundry" Church, whioh tho President somotimes attends WWaahington, derives its name from one of it early benefactors, who niade his large fortune in aioxmdry.-JPittsburgh Dixpatch. This is a mistnke, set afloat by Mr;,-. Mary Clemmer. The name i aeriyëcl from "TheFoundery," an old building inLondon in which "Methodism" ivas born, and of which -we present au outlinu ■ sketch : John Wesley's friends had been worshiping with tho Moravians in Fetter lane, London, but Wesley (dislikiiifr. some of their fauatical teachings) deteimined to procure some other place oí worship. Upon a corner, in a suitablu loeftlity, stood au old cannon foundry, where, tlirough several English revolutions, cannon luid been cast by the English monarchists. This building WcsFey secured and fitted up as a "mwnghouse," thus convertingitintoaspiritnnl armory. Here the Methodism took its rise. For tliirty-seven years this was the scène of the labora of the Wesleys, and it is no wonder that the name "Foundry Cliurch " is dear to the Methodist heart, and is adopfced ag a family name, just as Plymoutli, Pilgrim and Puritan liave been taken by the Oongregationalists. It is au humblclooking place of worship by the side of the Metropolitan in Washington.- (jherlin (Ohio) tfewtf.
