-We clip the following paragraph írora the editorial columns of the Detroit Tribune of May 3 : " We learn with pleasure that the name of Thomas M. Cooley, of Arm Arbor, will be presented to the President, with atrong backing from this and other States, for the vacancy lelt by the death of Judge Emmons. It is no exaggeration to say that the Seventh Circuit contams no lawyer who is superior to Judge Cooley in ability or is his equal in natioual reputation. The appointmeut would be recognized by the profession in all parta of the Union as one eminently fit to be made, and would tully maintain the high character of the Federal judiciary." The local friends of Judge Cooley, while they indorse cordially and heartily the commendatory words of the Tribune, see (some of them at least) two objections : lst That the appointment would of course lose the services of Judge Cooley both to the Supreme Court of the State and the Law Department of the University ; and 2d. That it would cali him so much away from his pleasant home in this city, and perhaps result in a permanent chango of resideuce.
