A short distance below Taylortown they were stopped by tlie slirill whistle of a rattlesnake. Seizing oluba, they started in the direction o the sound, and, walking a few rods mounted a sinall ledge of rocks. The noiso of the rattlesnakes was heard in the brosh benoath them. Arthur MoCiu-thj leanod over the ledge and saw two monster snakes coiled upon stones, and their tails wriggling íiercely. Tnkiug a roundabout way, the men approiichod thern As they neared them si fierce buzzing broke upon them, and, ijeering tlirougl tlie thicket upon a stóny mound, their eyes beheld a terrible picture. The spot was like a black moviug mass, bo tliiek were the snakes. Though at lirst startled, the courage of the fishermen did not fail them. Walking cautiously townrd the den the battle began. The enoounter lasted several minutes, and seventy-two of the reptiles were killed. The reinainder, estimuted at 200, escajjed. Tliose lulled measuxed fvom three and a half to fonr and a half feet in lengtli, and several had twentj' three rattles. Tlie fishermen woro high leathcr fishing boots, and wero severa! times stiuck by the reptiles. This den is about two milos from the celebrated Bald Hill den, at whicli two New York gentlemen, who were paesing througli the woods a few years ago, had a desperate encouuter and killed ■ nearlv ! 300 Biiakes.-
