A deserter from the United States armv went into business na a fahrUer in Oak'land, Cal., and prospered. A former comrade recognized him, and extorted blackniail by thrcatening to expose him to the antíiorities. The barber paid regularly $5 a week for silence. Then the blackmailor took into the plot a friend, who, by similar threatf, got $3 a week. At length a third rascal joined in tho attaok, and the bnrber, seeing thathispay-roll waslikelyto inerease beyoud his resources, resolved to kill oí!' tho recipiente of his money. Ho shot one of bhem, was eaught in the act, and is now in jail, where, awaiting prosecution, he is at least íree from persecutiou. During the fifty-eight years which have passed since Amorican Odd Fèllowship was pfitablinlifd, over ( 10, 1 100, - 000 have been oolleeted, of which npwaxd oi $22,000,000 have been expended tor the relief of those entitlod to it. Soine 720,000 brothers have been aided.
