The Superintendent of Schools of the township of Ann Arbor, Kev. Emil Baur, conceived the idea of having a. district school picnic in he towuship, and last Satnrday waa the day appoiuted for the gathering. Owing to the fact that there were three or tour meetings of a similar character iu the township at the same ime, the number ia atteudance was not arge. The festival was held at Keppler's School House. Three or iour of the districts were tepresented by teachers and scholara. L'lie exercises were opened by singing, and he superintendent beiug introduced made a very excellent address, subject: "The Ohildren of the Country." He was followed by ome remarks from L. Davis and Warren A. iillard, Bsq., of the township of Anti Arbor. Eecitations and readíngs by a number of the pupils of the school followed, all oE which were excellent, showiug that they had bee n well instructed in that very important branch otscience, - grossly neglectedinsome schools,- the art of reading and of speaking. These exeroises being closed, a table 40 feet long was spread and a bountiful supply of the substautials and luxuries of the farm and garden was placed upon it, to the evident satisfaction of all present. It waa indeed a very enjoyable occasion. Great credit is due to Mr. Baur and Miss Lizzie Doty, the assistant superintendent, for the labor and pains beBtowed upon this, the firet gathering of the kind ín the township. Mr. John Keppler and Mr. Fred. Widenmann are also entitled to the gratitude of all concerned for preparing the place designated for the entertainment. Miss Mary Jolly, the teacher in that district, comes in for a large ahare of the praise bestowed by all the people upon the superior excellence of the preparations and the manner in which the affair was conducted. The townBhip is very fortúnate m having two as good educators as Mr. Baur and Miss Doty to supervise its school intere9tB. We learn tbat they are doing excellent service for the schools of the township.
