Robert Dale Owen, of New Harinony, Ind., whose death oecurred a few iluys agof has beeu known for many years as au American autlior, but was, in i'aet, bom in Glasgow, Scotland, being the son of llobert uwen, au Énglish Social Keformcr, wliose place of nativity was North Wnles. Robert Dale carne tu America in 1823, accompanied by his faihèr, and first became known as a writer while editing a weekly newspaper, the Free Knquirer, started in New York by him, in 1828, and which lived three years. Since thnt time his home has boon in New Harmony, from wliioh place he was sent to the Indiana Legislaturo as a Representativo three terin8, and twice to Congross, as a Democrat, sei"ving from 1843 until 1847. Atter tilia he devoted himself to writing, iiinl iesued miniorous works, mostly upun subjects of reform, natiomi] and social. Bficoming a believer in the phenomena of Spiritualism, Mr. Owen dovoted the closiug years of his life to that subject up to two or three years since, when he becaine insano, and was sent to a private asylum. ïtecovering after several months of confinement, lic again rctumed home, but ibstaincd as much as possible from dwelliug upon tlic subject which is supposed to have cansed his metitul nialady. His health brokcin, death soon followed.
